Is it possible for cherry barbs to spawn randomly?

My cherry barbs appear to be spawning. There are five females and one male in my 55 gallon tank. The male has been chasing one female consistantly, and has caught up with her twice where he wrapped over her back and they jittered, then broke free. They did it once by the filter intake and once over my java fern. My gold barbs and danios are chasing them (perhaps for a snack?) But I havn't prepared or conditioned them. I feed them freeze-dried blood worms once a week, but that's all that's special. Was this spawning?
